The Map Collection

One of Vicky Steane’s most distinctive and celebrated bodies of work, the Map Collection brings together original mixed media paintings created directly onto vintage and found maps. Each piece places a subject — animal, bird, or creature — into the landscape it inhabits or evokes, the cartographic detail beneath becoming as much a part of the artwork as the paint above. The result is something deeply layered, both visually and conceptually — art that is rooted in place, memory, and the natural world.

The Bruton Barn Owl — Gold Leaf on Vintage Ordnance Survey Map

A breathtaking barn owl in full flight, rendered in gold leaf and ink across a vintage Ordnance Survey map of the Somerset countryside around Bruton and Batcombe. The owl’s wings span the fields and farm tracks of the map, its feathers catching the light in real gold — a luminous, ethereal piece that glows differently depending on the light. Framed in a deep navy and gold border, this is one of Vicky’s most refined and collectible map works.

This piece is deeply connected to the landscape it depicts. Vicky is the featured commissioned artist for the Brue Life River Conservation Project — a community-led initiative to restore and protect the River Brue and its surrounding Somerset ecosystem. The project is currently seeking funding and volunteers, and Vicky’s art is central to raising awareness of this vital conservation work.
